Kielder Water

Kielder Water is home to the biggest man-made lake in northern Europe and the biggest working forest in England. It covers 250 square miles. There is a track around the lake which is 26 miles and this is used by cyclists and walkers and the forestry.  There are visitor centre around the lake (Tower Knowe,  Leaplish and Kielder Castle) where you can eat and stay, and the village at the end of the lake has a campsite where you can also stay.

We have visited several times and it is a wonderful place to stay and walk or cycle.  When I was getting stronger I wanted to prove that I could still do physical things and we decided to take a couple of days to cycle around the lake.  It was on this trip that we discovered the art and architecture around the lake path.  There has been a huge investment in outdoor art here which is both beautiful and useful.  Artists were commissioned to design interesting and unusual structures that could double as shelters in bad weather and they certainly came up with some wonderful designs.  Later we visited again and walked the path over two days. On yet another occasion we visited the observatory and Turrell Skyspace.

Here are the pictures from the mix of visits:

The Art and Architecture at Kielder website is a great spot to browse and find out more about each work and the designers.
